  1. Hello, fellow Mathews! My name is Charles, I live in Mustang, Oklahoma. I am the son of Allen Lynn Mathews, grandson of James David Mathews. A nonfiction/geneological book of the Mathews family has been written by a family member who was a direct descendant of an actress made famous in a dusty Nevada mining town. If the names Guymon Faukes, or allusions to a Third Earl of Portland, or William Robert McCurdy(James’ brothers’ uncle) have been found in you research

    • Hello!! I am James “Kevin” Mathews. I currently reside in Kentucky, but my grandparents were in northern Louisiana. My grandfather was Fred A. Mathews, Sr. My lineage on my father’s side, so far as I can tell, goes Joby D. Mathews (my father); Fred A. Mathews; George W. Mathews; William G. Mathews; Richard Lewis Mathews; Isaac (Jr.); Isaac (Sr.)… That’s where I am, so far, in my research.

      • Dear Kevin,
I am David Mathews (Forrest Lee, David, James Waldrum, Josiah Allen, Lewis, Isaac Jr, Isaac Sr and Mary M.).

Mary M, daughter of Captain Samuel of Richmond County, is thought to have been a daughter of John Mathews who was descended from Samuel Jr. and Samuel Sr.. Samuel Sr. is thought to have come from the Welch family, Mathew, descended from Mathew ap Ievan, who loved in the 14th century.

Do you have information on Isaac Sr.’s parents? Was his father James Mathews of Halifax, NC? Can you verify that Isaac Sr.’s wife. Mary was also a Mathews descended from the colonial Mathews in Virginia—Captain Samuel of Richmond County, John and Samuel Jr./Samuel Sr.?

Our records show that Lewis (b. 1773), son of Isaac Jr. and grandson of Isaac Sr., was married to Nancy Allen of Edgefield County, South Carolina. Do your records show the same?

  2. I am the 2nd daughter of Bernard wayne mathews & sharon lowe mathews from New Hampton, Ia. My fathers’ dads name is Christopher Wayne Mathews from Cresco, Ia. Or that area, he past away before I was born in 1967. I am interested in finding out more on my Mathews’ ancestors.

  3. im the daughter of gordon edward mathews sr from bessemer al i am trying to trace my dads fothers side of the family his names is rogers willie mathews that is all i know about grandfother do not know his parents names he passed away in 1986

  4. Tina,
Your father’s name does not appear in our records. Check the genealogy of George Mathews, one of the founders of Selma, who moved to Mathews, Alabama.

    Good luck!

  5. Hi I’am the daughter of James Clifford Mathews jr grand daughter of James Clifford Mathews Sr he was the son of Booz Mathews of Rockingham NCon US 1. Also the father of Dorothy ,Kiddie ,William,Irean . My grandfather had n brother’s but I don’t know their names. Please let me know if you have any information on them

  6. I, too, am descended from Isaac and Mary Mathews through Moses Mathews and Sally Findlay and have been looking for proof of both Isaac and Mary’s parents. Please share any documentation found as I will gladly share if I have anything you might need. My Mathews’ settled in Oglethorpe County, GA and there are descendants still living on what (I believe) may be land left from the family’s Revolutionary Land Grant. I am a member of the DAR through Moses and would also like to use my Mathews line to join other lineage societies.

    • Lawren:
It is nice to hear from you. As you know, Isaac Sr. and Mary’s parents are difficult to document, The most exhaustive study I know of was done by Mary Alice Virgil Barta who lived in Plano, Texas. She lists Mary’s parents as Samuel M and Elizabeth Braxton. Mary was born in Virginia about 1700. Mary Alice cites Margaret M. Hoffman, Genealogical Abstracts of Wills, 1785-1824 Halifax County, NC.

Isaac is thought to be related to John Mathews of Milton, Devon County, England who descended from Sr. David Mathew of Wales. Sr. David was also said to be an ancestor of the Samuel Mathews who had a daughter, Mary (Samuel, John, Samuel, Samuel). The Samuels are discussed in Virginia Colonial history.

In one account the Isaac who married Mary was the son of Thomas, son of John, son of Edmond, son of James, son of Edmond Jr., son of Edmond Sr., son of John, son of Jenkyn, son of David Jr., son of Sr. David. Another source takes issue with this genealogy. I found it at http://bluntrazor.com. The author only identifies himself as a grandson of a Buster Blackwelder who had Mathews ancestors. I can no longer find the Mathews genealogy at this web address but, in brief, it was centered on an Isaac Mathews who died in Edgefield, South Carolina in 1791. The author believes this Isaac came from Halifax, NC and a family that was earlier in Surry County, VA. In the Virginia records there are Thomas, John, and James Mathews in the late 1600s. Thomas and James each had Isaac descendants. And there was an Edmon or Edward in this area who was referenced in a 1716 land deed as the recipient of land belonging to a Thomas Mathews.

There was also a James Mathews mentioned in a 1708 deed whose wife was named Jeane. These are thought to be the parents of another James Mathews whose wife was Ann and they appear in a 1728 land grand and a 1733 deed. The couple had a son, Isaac, perhaps who married a Mary, and produced children: Samuel, Thomas, Robert, Peter, Suzanna, Jean, Isaac, Mary, Sarah, and Repps. This Isaac is said to be the one who died in 1791 but that Isaac’s wife was Ann and their children were not the same as those of Isaac and Mary.

The Isaac in 1791 and his wife Anna (Quarles) had children Moses, Daniel, Anna, Elizabeth, and Cabell who were mentioned in a court suit in 1814 along with brothers Hardy, Micajah, and Lewis. Lewis’ son with Nancy Allen, Josiah Allen Mathews, was my grandfather’s grandfather’s father.

With so many Mathews in the Carolinas and Virginia with names like Thomas, James, Edmon, and Isaac that match the names in other genealogies, deciding which was which is going to take more research. But they do seem to be related. There does seem to be an Isaac and Mary and there certainly was a James and Jean and an Isaac and Ann.

If you have more information, I would appreciate knowing about it.

      Best regards,

      • Dear David,
I am Andrew Arthur Matthews from Cambridge UK, researching my paternal line and if you feel you have a British or / and LLANDAFF, Cardiff, Wales connection I would be delighted to hear from you. It is most likely that I am related to the Earls of Llandaff Wales, who can trace back to the medieval and back still further. No proof yet but it will reveal itself soon ! This Matthews/ Mathew/ Mathews were a very important old English family at the very highest level in society, law, medicine, trade etc and I feel there is a good chance of a connection to the US, perhaps to first Europe settlers 1622, Jamestown, Virginia, one Samuel Mathews.

        Anyway I hope to hear

        All best regards

        Andrew

  7. Hi, I am researching my grandmother’s line which has sources back to a Thomas Mathews who was born in 1720 in South Carolina. He would be my Great Grandfather x7. My grandma was a Crosby, and the first Mathews that shows up in the direct line is an Elizabeth Jane Mathews, her father William Mathews, Thomas Mathews, Ezekial Mathews, and then the Thomas Mathews that was born in 1720. I am finding all of this information on your site very helpful, and it is looking like I am maybe related to the people on this site. :)

  8. What a great resource for the Mathews family name. I am descended from Elizabeth Braxton Mathews (1685- 1706) / Thomas Mathews who’s son James Mathews fathered a son Thomas who changed the name to Mathis. These are Georgia and South Carolina Mathews/Mathis . Still have gaps in the research but find sites such as yours help a great deal and just wanted to say thanks

    Linda

  9. I ,too, am looking for information on the marriage of Isaac and Mary Mathews. I need proofs that they were married and had a son named Moses.I can not find anything that the society will consider as proofs. They say Mary died in her teens with out any children (she is not in Purse and Person). If she is not in there then she did not exist. If anyone has any information would you please share,I will be more then happy to pay for the info if needed.

  10. Dear Sir and /or Ma’am, I am descended from a Calvin J Mathews who is buried in Coffeeville Cemetery and married Martha Elizabeth McCorquodale Robinson after the WBTS. Obediah Robinson died in Tullahoma where the 32nd ALA INF Regt was for a period. CJ Mathews was a compatriot of Robinson and returned home and married and raised the Robinson children while having a few of his own. He was born in 1842 and died in 1908. His daughter, Lela Inez Mathew’s was my Great Grandmother and married a Alonzo Lewis from Cuba Ala. Martha McCorqoudale was the first daughter of Malcolm and Elizabeth Figures Larkin, who was his second wife and previously married to a Larkin. Her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Coleman Figures who are buried in Coffeeville Cemetery. She was the niece of John W Walker, first Alabama US senator, from Huntsville. He raised her and her brothers after her mother, Mary Jane Walker, passed in Georgia where they were from before moving to Mississippi territory with Leroy Pope to Huntsville. Her uncle was also president of Alabama constitutional convention in 1819 when Alabama became a state. She grew up in his home which also include Leroy Pope’s daughter Matilda. I believe one of the many McCorquodale daughters were named Matilda and may have moved to Texas where her descendant became a governor. Gov. White, I think?

Anyway, my question is my CJ Mathews related to your Mathews in anyway?

    • Richard,
We are cousins. I am Edward Leslie Lewis Sr’s grandson. He was the brother of your grandfather, Willie Vaughn Lewis. Marcia Lewis Champion was my mother. Calvin Matthews married Martha McCorquodale, and their daughter was Lelia Inez Matthews ( we called her “Big Mama”) So, we are part of the Matthews family, also. Do you have any info on John Coleman, who was Elizabeth Coleman Figures’ father?

  11. Hello, my name is Mary Mathews. My sister Margaret and I have been researching the Mathews family since 2011 and 2012. We know our father was John M Mathews b.1918 in Dallas Texas. We know his father was Wilmer Bishop Mathews b.1878 in Van Buren Arkansas and he lived and died in Dallas on April of 1946. We know our grandfather -Wilmer’s dad was John Finney Mathews son of Ezekiel Wadell Mathews b. 1808 South Carolina. E W’s dad was Joseph Calhoun Mathews – son of Isaac Mathews and Anne Quarles Calhoun Mathews- married Oct 12, 1784 in Abbeyville SC. We cannot find Isaac Mathews’s father. The photos or images of John Mathews – Gov of SC in 1796 – look like our DAD. We might be from the David Mathews because the Mathews men in our family look like Sampson Mathews b. 1730’s, George Mathews, gov of GA, Mason Mathews of W Virginia. They look like all the Mathews men in our family. Do you have any photos or images of Isaac Mathews or James Mathews from the early years of 1670 – 1800’s? Sure like your sight! You guys have a really big family reunion. You all look happy and connected. Wish we could get one going after we find out what line we are from. We think it could be John Mathews, Toby Mathews, David Mathews or James. We are stuck on the (Isaac) Mathews who married and Anne Calhoun Mathews. Thanks for letting me rant about our inept ancestry research. Appreciate any knowledge you may have towards the Isaac Mathews blockage. Take Care. Mary Mathews

  13. Hello,
I am a descendant of Moses Mathews Sr. My mothers maiden name is Mathews, her father Paul Hamilton Mathews was born in TX to James Monroe Mathews. I have been putting together my tree on Ancestry, but according to the local SAR, i have an error somewhere. Is there a document that i can compare to to hopefully find my error? 14. Josiah Allen and Cebell Mathews descendants can easily join DAR or SAR. I proved it and Joined the Daughters of the American Revolution. The two Isaac Mathews listed above were problematic to prove who was who. The Isaac Mathews listed with wife Ann…She is Anne Calhoun captured by Indians and held for years. Captured
at the Long Cane SC massacre. Lots of interesting information out there about her.

      • Dear Carla,
Yes I found that puzzling to when I embarked on researching my paternal line of MATTHEWS. However do not be put off as I have found that within the same Matthews line the spellings change sometimes from generation to generation but it is still the same family. So in my case I look at all derivation of my surname ; Mathews, Mathew, Matthews etc. Can be confusing but the devil is in the details.

        Good luck
        Andrew

  15. I am Kathy Henry whose father was Eugene Mathews D.O.B. 03/20/1926. His father was Fred Mathews D.O.B. 02/28/1891. His mother was Ora Short Mathews D.O.B. May 10th 1900. I ha e no other info and am wondering if you could help me to see if this is the same lineage.

  16. Hello! I am excited to find this site. I have not known anything of the Mathews line until now. My paternal grandmother (Mary Lee Mathews Osborne) was the daughter of Autus Mathews. He was the son of Lorenza Walton Mathews, the son of John Mathews, the son of Josiah. John, Lorenza, and Autus are all buried in Port Cemetery in Sentinel, OK.

Do you still have a Mathews family reunion?

    • I am interested also. Have been to the Cemetery in Port several times and recently placed a handmade wooden maker on an unmarked grave that is also part of the family

    • Dear Heather,
Thank you for your response, information and I shall bear you in mind.
I have just started looking into my MATTHEWS lineage whose origins are from Llandaff, Cardiff, Wales, UK. So with that in mind I am minded to seek out those American families with the same roots.

      Best wishes

      Andrew

  20. I am looking for information on Richard Mathews (1803-Aft 1880), my 3rd great grandfather, 1840 living in Marion, Marion SC. Married Dorcus Poston. Migrated 1840’s Gadsden County Fl. Children Mary Elizabeth, Telitha, Rosanna, Solomon, Celia born in SC and Dorcus born in Gadsden County Fl.

    • Dear Rose,
Thank you for your interest and response.
My MATTHEWS lineage comes from Llandaff, Cardiff, Wales, UK so I am minded to concentrate on those American families that share the same origin.

      Best wishes
      Andrew

    • Saw you post dated 5/16/18 concerning information on Richard Mathews. My Greatgrand Mother was born Charlotte Mathews, in 1871. She was the daughter of Solomon Mathews and Margaret McDaniel Mathews. She married James Lamar Poston in Gadsden County, Florida. Like you, I had hit many stumbling blocks for much before that time.

    • Ms. Worley, my mother was a Worley from Ky. I have worked for 50+years on my Worley family. My ancestor, John Worley of Halifax Co., N.C.-we have been unable to find out who his wife was. Deeds show James Mathis/Mathews and also Thomas Mathis/Mathews as neighbors. I am trying to find if my John was married to a Matthews. Your name caught my attention. Could we exchange a little more information through e-mail. I know that in York Co., Va. a Worley woman who had married Thomas Pace, later married a Matthews when Pace died. I believe this to be a part of my Worley family. Thank you.

  21. Dear all MATTHEWS, MATHEWS, MATHEW ETC
I am Andrew Arthur Matthews of Cambridge UK currently researching my paternal family line. There is evidence but as yet nothing definitive that I am blood related to the Earls of Llandaff. Cardiff, Wales, UK and if so my line goes back to medieval and even further. To date I have not found a link to the USA in particular , Jamestown Virginia where I known Samuel Mathew/s arrived from UK in 1622.
I would very much welcome any feedback with anyone who has a UK connection or / and India user the British Rule as my ancestors served for the Honerable East India Company, Indian Army, Indian Civil Service, Indian
Police Service, and various Indian Railway Companies.

I wish you all well and hope to hear very soon,

    Andrew

    • Andrew Arthur Matthews, I am descended from Moses Mathews (Mathews also spelled Matthews) of Halifax, Virginia, (1725-1806). to Dr John Pope Sr (1749-1802) to Keturah Pope Long to Margaret Pope to Mary Ann Reed that leads to my grandmother Grace Maud Zimmerman Buscho whose mother descended from Mary Ann Reed. From Moses Mathews, born in Halifax, Virginia you can trace his parents Isaac Edward Mathews, Sr. and Mary Braxton Mathews, the genealogy will lead back to John Mathews born about 1576 of Milton, Somersetshire, England. I don’t know the names of all of his children except for Thomas Mathews born about 1674 in England and died in Virginia USA (date of death unknown). In England, through centuries back, you can trace from John Mathews, 1576, England, to Ynyr, King of Gwent (born about 1030), Wales married Joyce De Baladon of Abergavenny (born 1034), Monmouthsire, England. I’m not sure if this is what you would be looking for. Sincerely, Jeanne Drewrey

      • Dear Jeanne,
Thank you for your interest and response and what a wonderful tree you have.
Yes I have come across John Matthews from Dorset , not Somerset, maybe a different person ? However I have not been able to evidence a link to my line.
As my lineage originated in Llandaff. Cardiff, Wales, UK am minded to concentrate on any American families that share this location.

        Best wishes

        Andrew

  22. Howdy, my name is Elizabeth Daveese Davison, nick name is “Dee.” I am the great granddaughter of Susan Graves Matthews and Clarence Boxley. I am curious where Drury Matthews (1828-1904) got his name. Drury is a unique name and tracing back, I can’t find anyone with that name. Also I do have Susan Matthews pic and would love to share (we look too much alike) Also, my middle name is Daveese and I am not sure where that name originated from, if anyone has information, I would be most grateful.
    Family is great!!!

  23. Dear Merle,
Apologies for delay in responding to your last post.
I would very much like to correspond with your regarding our Matthews/ Mathews / Mathew family name.
Please can you contact me using, a.a.matthews@btopenworld.com and I do look forward to hearing from you soon.
    All best regards

  24. William Charles Mathews
Most of known family reside in southern Indians, Texas, Colorado and a few other areas. I have some genealogy information to the 1750 or so mostly in North Carolina and Virginia.

  25. This is a great way to find relatives, my father William Alvin Mathews never said much about his family, what I’d like to know is why Mathews was with two T’s at one time?

  26. I am in a quandary. My 2nd Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Mathews who was born 1801 in Georgia, her mother was Sarah Mathews born 1773 in Virginia ( from the 1850 Census) and was a widow. She possibly had a son named Henry Mathews ( could be two tt’s) and lived in Harris County, Georgia where Sarah Mathews was living with her daughter Elizabeth and son In Law. Now eveytime I see that people are placing Arthur Matthew as Elizabeth’s father and Sarah as Sarah Vines. My problem is the difference in their daughter Elizabeth and the daughters husband. At one time when we had Genealogy.Com a woman claiming to be a professional Genealogist stated that Arthur was the father, and Sarah Vines the mother. but as I said the difference in the marriage date, and the birth of Elizabeth my great grandmother. Can Anyone help me.
