I, too, am descended from Isaac and Mary Mathews through Moses Mathews and Sally Findlay and have been looking for proof of both Isaac and Mary’s parents. Please share any documentation found as I will gladly share if I have anything you might need. My Mathews’ settled in Oglethorpe County, GA and there are descendants still living on what (I believe) may be land left from the family’s Revolutionary Land Grant. I am a member of the DAR through Moses and would also like to use my Mathews line to join other lineage societies.

It is nice to hear from you. As you know, Isaac Sr. and Mary’s parents are difficult to document, The most exhaustive study I know of was done by Mary Alice Virgil Barta who lived in Plano, Texas. She lists Mary’s parents as Samuel M and Elizabeth Braxton. Mary was born in Virginia about 1700. Mary Alice cites Margaret M. Hoffman, Genealogical Abstracts of Wills, 1785-1824 Halifax County, NC.
Isaac is thought to be related to John Mathews of Milton, Devon County, England who descended from Sr. David Mathew of Wales. Sr. David was also said to be an ancestor of the Samuel Mathews who had a daughter, Mary (Samuel, John, Samuel, Samuel). The Samuels are discussed in Virginia Colonial history.
In one account the Isaac who married Mary was the son of Thomas, son of John, son of Edmond, son of James, son of Edmond Jr., son of Edmond Sr., son of John, son of Jenkyn, son of David Jr., son of Sr. David. Another source takes issue with this genealogy. I found it at http://bluntrazor.com. The author only identifies himself as a grandson of a Buster Blackwelder who had Mathews ancestors. I can no longer find the Mathews genealogy at this web address but, in brief, it was centered on an Isaac Mathews who died in Edgefield, South Carolina in 1791. The author believes this Isaac came from Halifax, NC and a family that was earlier in Surry County, VA. In the Virginia records there are Thomas, John, and James Mathews in the late 1600s. Thomas and James each had Isaac descendants. And there was an Edmon or Edward in this area who was referenced in a 1716 land deed as the recipient of land belonging to a Thomas Mathews.
There was also a James Mathews mentioned in a 1708 deed whose wife was named Jeane. These are thought to be the parents of another James Mathews whose wife was Ann and they appear in a 1728 land grand and a 1733 deed. The couple had a son, Isaac, perhaps who married a Mary, and produced children: Samuel, Thomas, Robert, Peter, Suzanna, Jean, Isaac, Mary, Sarah, and Repps. This Isaac is said to be the one who died in 1791 but that Isaac’s wife was Ann and their children were not the same as those of Isaac and Mary.
The Isaac in 1791 and his wife Anna (Quarles) had children Moses, Daniel, Anna, Elizabeth, and Cabell who were mentioned in a court suit in 1814 along with brothers Hardy, Micajah, and Lewis. Lewis’ son with Nancy Allen, Josiah Allen Mathews, was my grandfather’s grandfather’s father.
With so many Mathews in the Carolinas and Virginia with names like Thomas, James, Edmon, and Isaac that match the names in other genealogies, deciding which was which is going to take more research. But they do seem to be related. There does seem to be an Isaac and Mary and there certainly was a James and Jean and an Isaac and Ann.

It is most likely that I am related to the Earls of Llandaff Wales, who can trace back to the medieval and back still further. No proof yet but it will reveal itself soon ! This Matthews/ Mathew/ Mathews were a very important old English family at the very highest level in society, law, medicine, trade etc and I feel there is a good chance of a connection to the US, perhaps to first Europe settlers 1622, Jamestown, Virginia, one Samuel Mathews.

Hi, I am researching my grandmother’s line which has sources back to a Thomas Mathews who was born in 1720 in South Carolina. He would be my Great Grandfather x7. My grandma was a Crosby, and the first Mathews that shows up in the direct line is an Elizabeth Jane Mathews, her father William Mathews, Thomas Mathews, Ezekial Mathews, and then the Thomas Mathews that was born in 1720. I am finding all of this information on your site very helpful, and it is looking like I am maybe related to the people on this site. :)

I am descended from Elizabeth Braxton Mathews (1685- 1706) / Thomas Mathews who’s son James Mathews fathered a son Thomas who changed the name to Mathis. These are Georgia and South Carolina Mathews/Mathis . Still have gaps in the research but find sites such as yours help a great deal and just wanted to say thanks

I ,too, am looking for information on the marriage of Isaac and Mary Mathews. I need proofs that they were married and had a son named Moses.I can not find anything that the society will consider as proofs. They say Mary died in her teens with out any children (she is not in Purse and Person).If she is not in there then she did not exist. Dear Sir and /or Ma’am, I am descended from a Calvin J Mathews who is buried in Coffeeville Cemetery and married Martha Elizabeth McCorquodale Robinson after the WBTS. Obediah Robinson died in Tullahoma where the 32nd ALA INF Regt was for a period. CJ Mathews was a compatriot of Robinson and returned home and married and raised the Robinson children while having a few of his own. He was born in 1842 and died in 1908. His daughter, Lela Inez Mathew’s was my Great Grandmother and married a Alonzo Lewis from Cuba Ala. Martha McCorqoudale was the first daughter of Malcolm and Elizabeth Figures Larkin, who was his second wife and previously married to a Larkin. Her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Coleman Figures who are buried in Coffeeville Cemetery. She was the niece of John W Walker, first Alabama US senator, from Huntsville. He raised her and her brothers after her mother, Mary Jane Walker, passed in Georgia where they were from before moving to Mississippi territory with Leroy Pope to Huntsville. Her uncle was also president of Alabama constitutional convention in 1819 when Alabama became a state. She grew up in his home which also include Leroy Pope’s daughter Matilda. I believe one of the many McCorquodale daughters were named Matilda and may have moved to Texas where her descendant became a governor. Gov. White, I think?

Calvin Matthews married Martha McCorquodale, and their daughter was Lelia Inez Matthews ( we called her “Big Mama”) So, we are part of the Matthews family, also. We know his father was Wilmer Bishop Mathews b.1878 in Van Buren Arkansas and he lived and died in Dallas on April of 1946. Yes I found that puzzling to when I embarked on researching my paternal line of MATTHEWS. However do not be put off as I have found that within the same Matthews line the spellings change sometimes from generation to generation but it is still the same family. So in my case I look at all derivation of my surname ; Mathews, Mathew, Matthews etc. Can be confusing but the devil is in the details.

Hello! I am excited to find this site. I have not known anything of the Mathews line until now. My paternal grandmother (Mary Lee Mathews Osborne) was the daughter of Autus Mathews. He was the son of Lorenza Walton Mathews, the son of John Mathews, the son of Josiah. John, Lorenza, and Autus are all buried in Port Cemetery in Sentinel, OK.

Saw you post dated 5/16/18 concerning information on Richard Mathews. My Greatgrand Mother was born Charlotte Mathews, in 1871. She was the daughter of Solomon Mathews and Margaret McDaniel Mathews. She married James Lamar Poston in Gadsden County, Florida. Like you, I had hit many stumbling blocks for much before that time.
Ms. Worley, my mother was a Worley from Ky. I have worked for 50+years on my Worley family. My ancestor, John Worley of Halifax Co., N.C.-we have been unable to find out who his wife was. Deeds show James Mathis/Mathews and also Thomas Mathis/Mathews as neighbors. I am trying to find if my John was married to a Matthews. Your name caught my attention. Could we exchange a little more information through e-mail. I know that in York Co., Va. a Worley woman who had married Thomas Pace, later married a Matthews when Pace died. Andrew Arthur Matthews, I am descended from Moses Mathews (Mathews also spelled Matthews) of Halifax, Virginia, (1725-1806). to Dr John Pope Sr (1749-1802) to Keturah Pope Long to Margaret Pope to Mary Ann Reed that leads to my grandmother Grace Maud Zimmerman Buscho whose mother descended from Mary Ann Reed. From Moses Mathews, born in Halifax, Virginia you can trace his parents Isaac Edward Mathews, Sr. and Mary Braxton Mathews, the genealogy will lead back to John Mathews born about 1576 of Milton, Somersetshire, England. I don’t know the names of all of his children except for Thomas Mathews born about 1674 in England and died in Virginia USA (date of death unknown). In England, through centuries back, you can trace from John Mathews, 1576, England, to Ynyr, King of Gwent (born about 1030), Wales married Joyce De Baladon of Abergavenny (born 1034), Monmouthsire, England. Most of known family reside in southern Indians, Texas, Colorado and a few other areas. I have some genealogy information to the 1750 or so mostly in North Carolina and Virginia.
This is a great way to find relatives, my father William Alvin Mathews never said much about his family, what I’d like to know is why Mathews was with two T’s at one time?
I am in a quandary. My 2nd Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Mathews who was born 1801 in Georgia, her mother was Sarah Mathews born 1773 in Virginia ( from the 1850 Census) and was a widow. She possibly had a son named Henry Mathews ( could be two tt’s) and lived in Harris County, Georgia where Sarah Mathews was living with her daughter Elizabeth and son In Law. Now eveytime I see that people are placing Arthur Matthew as Elizabeth’s father and Sarah as Sarah Vines. My problem is the difference in their daughter Elizabeth and the daughters husband. At one time when we had Genealogy.Com a woman claiming to be a professional Genealogist stated that Arthur was the father, and Sarah Vines the mother. but as I said the difference in the marriage date, and the birth of Elizabeth my great grandmother.
